Chained Beasts

Named effects

Afflictions

Nine affliction names are known. Three have a behavior you can plan around. The other six are names only. 1.0 still holds a much larger pool than this list: more than seventy afflictions.

Published effects first
Annoying, Impulsive, and Infatuated have rules. The rest of the names do not.
Afflictions are the status layer on top of the fight, not a separate mode.

Annoying

Known effect

Allies often attack if you get too close.

Impulsive

Lock a new skill every second level and buy an item at every shop.

The camera follows one ally. You gain +10% damage when they look at you.

Bad Vibrations

Butterfingers

Narcissism

Gambling Problem

How to read the nine names

Use the two sort buttons above the cards. Known effects keep Annoying, Impulsive, and Infatuated in front. Name order is alphabetical, which is the faster way to check whether a word you heard is even on this list.

Annoying is a spacing problem for a chained party: standing on top of an ally is how you get hit by your own crew. Impulsive spends your build. Every second level locks a skill you did not freely choose, and every shop becomes a forced purchase. Infatuated moves the camera onto one teammate and pays you +10% damage while that teammate’s view includes you.

The six name-only afflictions are not hidden rules. Only the label is known. Do not treat a guess about Butterfingers or Gambling Problem as a 1.0 rule.

The larger pool and the Surgeon

The game holds more than seventy afflictions, more than seventy skills, and more than forty items. This list is the named affliction subset. The skill and item catalogs are counts, not name lists.

Between acts, the Surgeon can work on an affliction or augment a skill. Every procedure has a cost. No price menu is known, so a heal is not a free cleanse and it is also not a number you can look up. Potions can ease a wound, and the side effect can be a worse affliction.

One demo interaction sits outside these nine. In May 2026 a Twitch chat could vote on which affliction potion you drink. That vote is on Demo. It is not a 1.0 feature.

If a chain of allies is how your group takes damage, the party rules and the gamepad requirement are on Chains.

Status notes that are not affliction rows

Earlier builds describe stuns, injuries, beta skills, and difficulty labels. None of those is a tenth affliction. Mixing them into a 1.0 plan would pretend they belong on this list.

  • After the public playtest, shields became durability pickups that stun on block. A stun on block is a shield change, not Annoying, and not a new affliction name.
  • The Trainer can injure you. That injury is not one of the nine afflictions, and it has no name among them.
  • Psychosis, from the July 2026 open beta, shows hallucinated weapons. It is a beta skill, not one of these nine afflictions.
  • Untouchable, from that beta, grants 6 seconds of invulnerability after an execution. Those six seconds belong to Untouchable, not to Infatuated.
  • The Priceless Vase pays 100 coins if you hold it and take no damage. That wager is an item. Gambling Problem is still only a name, with no odds attached.
  • Executions and dismemberments are combat results from the demo and the closed beta. They are actions in a fight, not affliction names.
  • Pleb, Legionnaire, Centurion, and Hades are the four difficulty names from the May 2026 demo. 1.0 has ten difficulty levels. Neither set is an affliction.

What to spend on between acts

When Separation Anxiety, Bad Vibrations, Butterfingers, Narcissism, Gambling Problem, or Nerve Damage shows up, you have the label and no known trigger. Play that run as an unknown modifier.

The Surgeon, between acts, can work on an affliction or augment a skill, and every procedure has a cost. Spend coins on Annoying, Impulsive, or Infatuated when you already know the behavior you are paying to change. Procedure prices are unknown, so the choice is whether to pay, not which number to enter.
